Annual Breakdown Cover Could Become Compulsory

January 24th, 2011

Proposals have been put forward by the coalition government which could see Annual Breakdown Cover become compulsory in the UK.

As you well know, it is already compulsory for all motorists to have car insurance on a vehicle and, if the new proposals are accepted, then the same sort of rules will apply to breakdown cover also.

At the present moment there is no legal requirement to take out annual breakdown cover or joint breakdown cover on a motor vehicle so the British Insurance Brokers Association have come out in favour of the proposals.

The British Insurance Brokers Association says that compulsory breakdown cover on cars will level the playing field for all motorists and create a fairer system.

The same legislation will also hope to tighten up on the existing laws on car insurance too. At present, drivers can only be penalised for being without insurance if they are caught behind the wheel. Ministers hope to extend the laws so that car insurance will be compulsory even if the car is never taken out of the drive.

Ministers say that the new legislation on car insurance and breakdown cover will lead to lower premiums for motorists who stay within the law.

Don’t wait for breakdown cover to become a legal requirement as it makes sense to be covered anyway. Compare prices from various breakdown cover providers now on our UK Breakdown Cover Comparison page.

Green Flag Breakdown Cover With Santander Current Account

November 22nd, 2010

We’ve spotted a great deal if you are on the hunt for annual breakdown cover at the moment. Santander are currently trying to entice people to switch over to their current accounts from other banks and are offering a few benefits – such as breakdown cover – to sweeten the deal.

Until the 12 December you can switch to a Santander current account and could receive up to £100 in the process. There are a few current accounts to choose from, and not all of them entitle you to free UK breakdown cover, so pick out the one that’s good for you and there’s money to be saved.

Two of the Santander current accounts have no fees attached to them. First there’s the Santander ZERO and Preferred In Credit Rate current accounts. To qualify for the £100 cashback on these two accounts you have to switch your existing main current account to Santander and pay in £1000 a month. Both of these accounts offer 5% APR – but, unfortunately not the free breakdown cover.

So, if it’s the breakdown cover that’s the dealbreaker for you then you should look at the Santander Reward or Premium current accounts. Again, both of these accounts offer the £100 cashback providing you switch from another current account and pay in £1000 a month. The difference with these two accounts though is that they come with Green Flag breakdown cover and a bunch of other benefits. The Reward account costs £10 a month and the Premium costs £20 a month and other benefits include travel insurance and card loss assistance.

Head of Santander Current Accounts, Gillian Almond, said: “At Santander we offer a range of current accounts with some of the best rates on the market - and we’re rewarding every customer who switches their main current account to us with £100 cash. We want to encourage consumers not to settle for less and to shop around for the best current account deal. By joining Santander they’ll get £100 cash, a great in-credit interest rate as well as access to our preferential savings and mortgage products for our loyal customers.”

If these Santander current accounts don’t float your boat but you still need to find cheap car rescue cover then you will find great deals from Green Flag and other breakdown providers on our UK Breakdown Cover page.

Does Your Annual Breakdown Policy Cover Misfuelling?

October 20th, 2010

Do you know if your annual breakdown cover policy will pay out if you breakdown after filling up with the wrong fuel? Or will you breakdown providers stump up the money if you breakdown because you forgot to fill up?

Well, it might well be worth taking a look at the small print of your annual breakdown or joint breakdown cover when you get a moment because, according to the AA, over 100,000 motorists put the wrong fuel in their car every year and a significant proportion of them will not receive a penny if a breakdown results.

Almost a quarter of policies researched by the financial research firm Defaqto were found to include misfuelling as part of their exclusion policy. Furthermore, around 1 in 7 annual breakdown cover policies were found not to pay out if you breakdown after running out of fuel.

Defaqto examined close to 300 annual breakdown cover policies and found that many motorists would have to pay additional charges for car rescue after a breakdown due to misfuelling or running out of juice.

Mike Powell of Defaqto said: “Drivers putting the wrong fuel into a vehicle not only face a huge repair bill but may also find that their breakdown policy doesn’t provide cover for their vehicle to be towed to a garage. Even those motor breakdown policies that do cover such an eventuality will tend to find that the extent of the coverage is limited to towing the car to a garage or to their destination.”

So make sure you look into all of the subtle nuances of annual breakdown cover so that you are not caught out with a bill for something you didn’t expect. Find out which breakdown providers offer the best deals now using our Compare Breakdown Cover search facility.

Over £100 Million Wasted By Not Having Breakdown Cover

September 4th, 2010

The AA has revealed that over £100 million was wasted last year by people who did not have adequate annual breakdown cover when they needed it the most.

During the economic downturn it would seem that one area where people have tightened their belts is on the cost of motoring. One way to do that is to risk a breakdown without taking out car rescue cover. But, is it wise to do so?

The AA figures show that it is very important not to scrimp and save on your annual breakdown cover because the actual costs involved should you need to call someone out and pay for it yourself could be far, far higher and come at a time when you just don’t have the cash to pay.

Over 2 million people suffered the agony of breakdowns without cover last year and had to shell out an average of £100 to call out a garage to assist them. In many cases the individual costs where much higher than that if the vehicle could not be fixed on the spot and had to be recovered. And, since some annual breakdown cover starts out at less than £20 a month, it would seem to be a completely false economy to try save money and put your car at risk by not having some form of breakdown cover.

So, don’t leave yourself stuck at the side of the road when there is so much cheap car rescue assistance available. On our website you can compare the best value deals from a range of breakdown providers selling annual breakdown cover or even joint breakdown cover.

Company Car Owners Should Check European Breakdown Cover

August 17th, 2010

Company car fleet firm Masterlease has warned drivers who use a company car to check out their European breakdown cover provision if they plan to drive abroad.

Masterlease pointed out that there is often no clear guidance from companies on who takes responsibility for overseas insurance and breakdown cover when driving outside of the United Kingdom.

Although it is typical for company cars to come with breakdown cover for the employee, it is very often the case that the cover only applies when the car is driven inside the UK. Over the last decade the number of Brits taking their car across to Europe has doubled from under two million to around three and a half million drivers.

Masterlease say that people should ask their employers, fleet managers, insurance companies and breakdown providers who would foot the bill for any unfortunate incidents overseas. In many cases employees are not even entitled to take their company car outside of the UK under the terms and conditions of fleet managers and insurers.

Head of operations at Masterlease, Anthony Dowdall, said that often the employee who has the company car assumes that they will be covered but that the company feels it is the employee’s responsibility to take out the right cover for accidents that happen outside of the UK.

Dowdall said that it was perhaps the fleet managers who needed to stress the importance of European breakdown cover: “Roadside assistance on the continent can cost over €100 and bringing home a stranded vehicle can cost much more.  As well as ensuring drivers have adequate insurance and breakdown cover, businesses should have a policy in place for driving overseas and make sure drivers have information about what to do if they break down or have an accident abroad.”

Make sure you have adequate European breakdown cover whether you are lucky enough to drive a company car or not. You’ll find the best deals compared on our European Breakdown Cover page.

Sort Out Your Breakdown Cover Before Heading Off To Festivals

July 28th, 2010

M & S Car Insurance has been warning that people should sort out their annual breakdown cover before heading off to festivals this summer. The warning comes after a survey by the insurance company shows the intentions of your typical festival-goer.

Over half of all adults in the UK are expecting to go to one of over 350 festivals that will be hosted over the coming months and they are being warned to make sure they have adequate breakdown cover before setting off.

Four in five people who expect to attend the music festivals, literary events and foodie get-togethers this summer intend to use their wheels to get there. Over half will use their own car and one in five will bum a lift from someone else.

Andrew Ferguson, Head of General Insurance at M&S said: “British festival-goers need to make sure this is a summer to remember for the right reasons. Heavy festival traffic can lead to a higher level of accidents and breakdowns.”

That heavy traffic is indeed a perennial feature of festival attendance and is also one of the main contributors to cars overheating in the hotter summer months.

According to the AA, up to half of all breakdowns could be avoided simply by carrying out basic checks and regular servicing. However, even if you have taken all precautions, it still gives you peace of mind to know that should the worst happen, you have sufficient breakdown cover to call on.

With many festivals now taking place outside of the UK it can also pay to take out European breakdown cover so that you are covered wherever you travel - from Berlin to Burgas. If you are more the stay-at-home festival type though then use our finder to compare UK Breakdown Cover now.
